Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) - Selective solid media for microbiology

Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA for Sabouraud Dextrose Agar) is a medium for the isolation of pathogenic and non-pathogenic fungi microorganisms (molds and yeasts). This agar is naturally acidic which inhibits the growth of many bacteria.  It is used to control the sterility of pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. It also allows the specific research of Cadida albicans in pharmaceutical products. This medium was originally formulated by Sabouraud for the culture of pathogenic fungi associated with skin infections, called dermatophytes. Peptones (enzymatic digestion of casein and enzymatic digestion of animal tissues) provide the source of nitrogen and vitamins necessary for the growth of the organism in SDA. Dextrose is added as a source of energy and carbon. Agar is the solidifying agent. Chloramphenicol and/or tetracycline can be added as broad-spectrum antimicrobials to inhibit the growth of a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Gentamicin is added to further inhibit the growth of gram-negative bacteria.
