Biological Activity
TNF-α (HEK293) is a pleiotropic pro-inflammatory cytokine secreted by a variety of cells such as adipocytes, activated monocytes, macrophages, B cells, T cells, and fibroblasts. TNF-α is cytotoxic to a variety of tumor cells and is an important factor that mediates the immune response to bacterial infections. TNF-α also plays a role in the induction of septic shock, autoimmune diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammation and diabetes.
Measured in a cytotoxicity assay using L-929 mouse fibrosarcoma cells, the ED50 is < 0.05 ng/ml, corresponding to a specific activity of > 2.0 × 107 units/mg.
