Zeatin (C10H13N5O) is a natural plant hormone isolated from corn (Zea mays) at the phloem level. Its ribosylated form, zeatin riboside, is found mainly in the roots of plants. It belongs to the cytokinin family. It is a cytokine derived from adenine. It is the most common cytokinin in the plant kingdom.
It has two stereoisomers Z (cis) and E (trans). Z-zeatin plays a role in stopping potato dormancy.
Zeatin has a variety of effects, such as:
- Promote the initiation of calluses when combined with auxin
- Promote setting
- Delays the yellowing for vegetables
- Provoke the growth and flowering of the auxiliary stems.
Zeatin can also be applied to stimulate seed germination and seedling growth.
It has also been shown that zeatin promotes tobacco resistance to the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae, in which trans-zeatin has a greater effect than cis-zeatin.
