Yeast Malt (YM) broth - Non-selective liquid media for microbiology
Yeast Malt Broth (also called YM broth) is used for the detection, isolation and enumeration of fungi, especially yeasts and molds and other aciduric microorganisms such as Actinoplanes, Streptomyces, Streptoverticilium and Nocardia species, in various materials and for the culture of test strains for microbiological testing of vitamins.
Malt extract provides the carbon, protein and nutrient sources necessary for the growth of microorganisms. It is particularly suitable for yeasts and moulds as it contains a high concentration of maltose and other saccharides as energy sources. Yeast extract is the source of vitamins, especially of the B group. The acid pH of the malt extract broth (pH 3.0-4.0) is optimal for the growth of yeast and moulds while limiting the growth of other bacteria. YM broth can be acidified before sterilization.
