Description
Oligodendrocyte transcription factor 2 (OLIG2) is a transcription factor with basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) domains that plays a fundamental role in the production of neurons and glial cells. It is required for the specification of oligodendrocytes and motor neurons in the spinal cord, as well as for the development of somatic motor neurons in the hindbrain. It collaborates with OLIG1 to establish a pMN domain in the embryonic neural tube. OLIG2 expression is normally restricted to neural tissue; however, overexpression of OLIG2 has been observed in patients with lymphoblastic T-cell precursor leukemia or lymphoma. OLIG2 is a useful marker for the identification of oligodendrogliomas. The level of OLIG2 expression in oligodendrogliomas is more uniform and intense than in other glial tumors. Several brain tumors, oligodendroglioma (OG), clear-cell ependymoma (CCE) and central neurocytoma (CN), show different clinical and biological behavior; as well as significantly different prognosis and therapeutic approaches.
The Anti-OLIG2 antibody is useful for discriminating oligodendroglioma or neuroepithelial tumors (DNTs, OLIG2 positive) from CCE, CN and clear cell meningioma which are more negative for OLIG2.
