| Introduction | Aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT, or aspartate transaminase, AST, gene symbol GOT1) is an enzyme that switches the amine group of aspartate with the ketone group of 2-oxoglutarate to form glutamate and oxaloacetate, and vice versa. This enzyme requires pyridoxal 5’-phosphate (a vitamin B6 derivative) to function, as the reaction uses this molecule to transfer the amine group. Serum GOT1 increases in response to a variety of afflictions, including liver injury, acute haemolytic anaemia, myocardial infarction, and severe burns. |
