Human Colonic Cells

Human Colonic Cells

The colon is part of the digestive tract. It corresponds to the segment of the large intestine located between the cecum and the rectum. The main function of the colon is to produce fecal matter. Its main function is to complete the transformation of waste from the intestines into fecal matter. After digestion and absorption of nutrients in the small intestine, the food residue goes to the colon in liquid form. The colon absorbs the water from these residues. As the stool progresses through the colon, it becomes more and more solid. It is subdivided into 4 parts, the ascending or right colon, the transverse colon, the descending or left colon, and the sigmoid colon. Like other parts of the digestive tract, the colon is made up of 4 different layers: the mucosa, the submucosa, the muscularis composed of two layers of muscle fibers and the serosa which is the outer layer.
