Human Tissue pieces and blocks - Cartilage
Cartilage is a soft, sometimes elastic, connective tissue found in animals in many different types in the body, including on the surface of joints between bones and in the rib cage, ear, nose, bronchi or intervertebral discs. Cartilage is a tissue whose main function is to transmit and distribute loads when joints are loaded. It acts as a sort of ball bearing and shock absorber between the bone ends, accompanying each of our efforts and movements. Cartilage is made up of round cells, the chondrocytes, enclosed in cells called chondroplasts within an extracellular matrix consisting of glycosaminoglycans and collagen. Compared to other connective tissues, cartilage is neither vascularised nor innervated. In the event of damage, their repair is therefore slow or even almost non-existent in adults.
