Depression is a common mental illness characterised by symptoms such as persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness and disinterest in daily activities. Other common symptoms of depression include fatigue, insomnia or hypersomnia, loss of appetite or weight gain, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, difficulty concentrating and thoughts of death or suicide.

It is estimated that 5% of adults worldwide suffer from depression. Depression is one of the world's leading causes of disability and a major contributor to the global burden of disease. The effects of depression can be long-lasting or recurrent and can significantly affect a person's ability to function and live a fulfilling life. 

Depression is caused by complex interactions between social, psychological and biological factors. Life events such as childhood adversity, bereavement and unemployment all contribute to depression.
