Le bêta-mercaptoéthanol peut agir comme réactivateur enzymatique dans les systèmes nécessitant une réduction pour l'activation, et a été couramment utilisé pour réduire les liaisons disulfures afin de séparer les sous-unités protéiques pour les utiliser dans l'électrophorèse. Ce produit peut également être utilisé pour former de l'o-phtalaldéhyde-bêta-mercaptoéthanol (OPAME), un réactif fluorogène dont la réaction avec les amines primaires permet de détecter les acides aminés. Plus récemment, l'OPAME a été utilisé pour distinguer l'ADN ss de l'ADN ss et même les mésappariements d'une seule base dans l'hybridation de l'ADN.
