This lectin is not blood group specific although it does react stronger with human type A1 cells over A2, B, or O cells. The presence of a sialic acid residue may cause a lack of WFA reactivity. WFA contains a strong hemagglutinin activity and is a potent mitogen, both strongly inhibited by GalNAc, although mitogenic activity is also inhibited by N,N’-diacetylchitobiose.||Cy5, when bound to Wisteria floribunda Lectin (WFA/WFL), can show the binding pattern of this lectin in cellular imaging and flow cytometry. The excitation wavelength required for Cy5 to fluoresce is high enough to avoid overlap with most other fluorochromes, making it useful for dual-labeling experiments. Because of this high excitation, there is typically less background from autofluorescence of biological specimens.||Source:|Japanese wisteria||Blood Specificity:|Non-specific||Sugar Specificity:|N-Acetylgalactosamine||Inhibitory Carbohydrate:|Chitin hydrolysate or 500mM N-Acetylgalactosamine with acid or salt||Activity:|Less than 4mg/ml will agglutinate human type O1 erythrocytes. Less than 1ug/ml will agglutinate neuraminidase-treated erythrocytes||Mitogenic Acivitity:|Yes||Fluorescence:|Red||Excitation:|650nm||Emission:|670nm||Storage and Stability:|May be stored at 4°C. For long-term storage, aliquot and store at 4°C. Do not freeze. Aliquots are stable for 6 months after receipt. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer. Cy5 conjugates are light sensitive.
