Human primary cells - Hepatic System

Human primary cells - Hepatic System

The hepatic system plays an essential role in metabolism and produces digestive enzymes, synthesizes hormones, stores bile and eliminates toxins. Hepatocytes, stellate cells, endothelial cells and fibroblasts are essential components necessary for normal liver and gallbladder function. The liver has multiple functions but the 3 main ones are purification, synthesis and storage. It is an amphicrine gland allowing the synthesis of bile (exocrine role) as well as that of several carbohydrates and lipids (endocrine role). It also plays an important role in hemostasis. It is a richly vascularized organ. Atypical cell proliferation and regulation within the hepatic system contribute to the development of liver diseases and cancers. We propose different types of normal human primary cells in the hepatic cell system, including hepatocytes, hepatic sinusoidal endothelial cells, hepatic stellate cells, gallbladder fibroblasts and liver-derived mesenchymal stem cells.
